Shopify Plus or Salesforce? The choice reshaping fashion eCommerce

October 1, 2025

In digital fashion, simply “having a platform” isn't enough: you need the right one. Today's technology choice can create a difference of millions of euros in costs, timelines and performance. On the table are two opposing approaches: Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC), the long-standing enterprise benchmark, and Shopify Plus, the solution rapidly scaling across the mid-market and enterprise space.

Costs and time-to-market: the real game changer

Total Cost of Ownership is the variable that makes the most noise. An SFCC project can exceed €4 million over three years, between multi-year licences, dedicated teams and infrastructure. Shopify Plus, by contrast, ranges between €300,000 and €750,000 over the same period: up to 75% less. This isn't just about savings: those freed-up millions become fuel for marketing, international expansion and experimentation.

This ties directly into time-to-market. Salesforce typically requires 12-18 months to go live, with waterfall projects and large teams. Shopify Plus drastically shortens the timeline: 3-6 months to be up and running. In practice, that means gaining almost a year of active sales and reaching the market while opportunities are still hot.

Performance and conversions: numbers that speak for themselves

Both platforms handle high volumes, but with different philosophies. Salesforce claims up to 20,000 orders per minute, provided complex tuning and extra costs are in place. Shopify Plus has proven on the ground that it can handle 50,000 orders per minute, as seen on Black Friday 2024 with $4.6 million processed in one minute.

Checkout is another critical point: Shopify converts on average 36% more than Salesforce. Several brands that have migrated report concrete results: +20-45% conversion and up to +60% online revenue. Dermalogica, for example, recorded +119% in sales and +45% conversion after switching to Shopify Plus.

The fashion market trend

Luxury's “sacred cows” remain on Salesforce, protected by complex ecosystems and global processes. But the centre of gravity of digital fashion is shifting. Since 2022, over 60% of enterprise retailers have been evaluating more agile alternatives, and in 2023 alone at least 17 major fashion/lifestyle brands chose Shopify Plus.

The growth is clear: Shopify Plus posted +57% year-on-year growth in active stores (Q2 2025), against +13% for Salesforce. It now counts around 52,700 active Plus stores and an ecosystem of 6,000 apps, enabling rapid integrations and reducing reliance on custom development. In short: more brands ⇒ more partners ⇒ more innovation.

Conclusion: a strategic choice, not a technical one

The contest is no longer “feature versus feature”. It's a decision that touches on business model, agility and return on investment. Salesforce remains the choice for those who need integrated ecosystems and complex governance. But for fashion brands seeking speed, efficiency and growth, Shopify Plus is becoming the platform of reference.

In an industry where time is the real currency, the difference isn't made by whoever has more features, but by whoever arrives first and converts more. And today the numbers clearly point the way.
